As a makeup artist, I can tell you a secret the beauty industry whispers around: flawless makeup is mostly skincare. When skin texture is smooth and hydrated, foundation needs to do almost nothing — and that is when it looks like nothing at all, in the best way.
Texture — the tiny bumps, rough patches and uneven areas we all have — is completely normal. But if you want to refine it, these seven habits genuinely work. No miracle products, no twelve-step marathons.
1. Exfoliate gently, not aggressively
Two to three times a week, a mild chemical exfoliant (think lactic or mandelic acid) dissolves the dull layer scrubs can irritate. Over-scrubbing creates the very roughness you're trying to fix.
2. Layer hydration like clothing
A hydrating toner, then serum, then moisturizer — thin to thick. Each layer seals the last, and plump skin reflects light evenly, which reads as smoothness.
3. Never skip sunscreen
UV damage thickens and roughens skin over time. A daily SPF 30 is the single highest-impact texture habit, and modern gel formulas sit invisibly under makeup.
4. Double cleanse at night
Oil or balm first to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, then a gentle water cleanser. Residue left overnight congests pores and dulls the surface.
5. Mask with purpose
Clay once a week for congestion, hydration masks before events. Masking the night before a big day is my favorite bridal-trial trick.
6. Drink water, sleep deeply
Unromantic but true: dehydration and short sleep show up as dullness faster than any product can fix. The cream helps; the habits transform.
7. Prime for the finish you want
On makeup days, match primer to need — smoothing where pores show, hydrating where skin drinks. Primer is the bridge between skincare and color.
Start with two or three of these, give them a month, and watch how little foundation you suddenly need. And if you'd like a professional skin-prep before a big event, my face and eye service begins exactly there.
